Mystical Crete, largest and most southerly of the Greek islands, is perhaps best-known for the legend of the Minotaur, three generations before the Trojan wars. This narrow isle is the meeting point between Africa, Asia and Europe and was the cradle of European civilisation. The wealth of archaeological remains, gorgeous countryside and fabulous secluded beaches of the North, shaded by tamarisk trees, combined with reputedly the best climate in Europe, form an attractive package for countless visitors.
Greece is set to boom big-time, having become the focus of the influx of European structural funds. The demand for second homes from foreigners could reach 1 million units within the next few years. Demand is unlikely to be wholly matched by supply, especially in terms of modern summer vacation houses in organized complexes.
